Utilizing Mindfulness to Tackle the Job Interview Marla Gottschalk

Using Mindfulness to Tackle the Job Interview Marla Gottschalk Photograph by Max van sanctum Oetelaar on Unsplash At the point when we lose ourselves in an upsetting second â€" a work environment circumstance can rapidly go from testing to a possible catastrophe. Prospective employee meetings are a typical trigger of a large group of amazing feeling filled reactions; expectation, energy, dread. On the off chance that youve ever sat in the meeting seat, you are intensely mindful of the basic battle to stay cool and centered. As much as we endeavor to remain quiet â€" our brains can race crazy â€" similar to a runaway train. Overseeing yourself through this distressing dynamic is critical. Could the act of care help us through a meeting? Ongoing examination reveals to us that truly, it can. Extreme working environment situations can make our battle of flight reaction kick in â€" and prospective employee meet-ups positively qualify. Named an Amygdala Hijacks, by therapist Daniel Goleman, these minutes are portrayed by neurological procedures where our reasonable cerebrum (Neo-cortex) becomes overwhelmed by our passionate mind. This renders places us in a debilitated situation to manage these circumstances successfully. Care â€" characterized as The mental state where you center around the occasions of the current second â€" permits us to watch the occasions of our lives from a more secure separation, without fundamentally responding at that time. One component, is the thought of serenity, or non-reactivity to the occasions occurring around us. Care instructs us to focus and recognize both one's internal experience and the external world, without responding. Examined finally concerning its effect on both our mental and physical prosperity (See here and here), care can assist us with staying adjusted as a rule that may ordinarily crash us. Strikingly, one late investigation joins care to viable working environment conduct. The examination uncovers that care may help with jobs that require a progression of choices one after another, much the same as the numerous choices/reactions we face during a prospective employee meeting. Dealing with our programmed reactions, (for example, getting anxious or bothered) and re-centering that vitality toward remaining formed is critical. In what capacity may care help us in a prospective employee meeting? Most importantly, you need to precisely speak to your aptitudes and experience. Second thoughts concerning what you may have neglected to make reference to, (or did make reference to and shouldnt have) can demonstrate basic. During a meeting we can become overpowered and lose our heads as it were â€" losing center around the genuine objectives of the current discussion. (You may end up either hurrying ahead or looking into your last answer.) If you can't remain completely present, you may miss significant conversational signals that will assist you with introducing yourself well. We neednt trust that your next meeting will create methods to turn out to be progressively careful. Meshing strategies into our consistently lives can demonstrate commendable. Attempt these strategies: Practice the specialty of small scale reflection. These are 1 brief timeframes to stop (maybe when you feel generally occupied) and relax. While you are trusting that a meeting will start (appears these are constantly deferred), use the accompanying abbreviation instructed at Google: S.B.N.R.R. â€" Stop. Relax. Notice. Reflect. React. Tame the inward voice. Dont let an inward monolog dominate. (For huge numbers of us it is a terrified discussion.) Be mindful of a not exactly steady internal exchange, that may pop up. Deliberately intrude on it and supplant it with an increasingly positive message. Pull together on your definitive objective. Help yourself to remember the reason for the meeting: to precisely depict yourself as a patron. We as a whole have triggers that cause us to lose center and respond with dread or outrage. Screen these (specific points, and so on.) and help yourself to remain ahead to remember a passionate reaction design. Relax. While, we cannot stop the meeting â€" we can quietly tap ourselves on the shoulder to remain centered. At the point when you feel your psyche hustling, intellectually respite and tap. Gather yourself and come back to the occasion. Bring along a psychological rundown. Enter the meeting with 3 or 4 basic focuses about yourself, that you need to leave with the questioner. Utilize a suggestion to hover back and infuse these focuses into the discussion (take a stab at wearing your watch upside out or a green elastic band on your wrist). How would you remain quiet and centered during a meeting? Offer your techniques. Dr. Marla Gottschalk is an Industrial/Organizational Psychologist. She is a Senior Consultant at Allied Talent. Resume Objectives

Resume Objectives

The continue objective is your initial introduction. That is the manner by which your forthcoming boss will come to see you and decide if you're directly for the activity or not. It's your resume-you're going to enlighten them concerning yourself. It's your opportunity to sell yourself and to land that fantasy job.

You realize that you need to follow this 'rules' with regards to composing a resume objective. In any case, do you know why it is such a significant piece of your resume? For what reason doesn't a synopsis of experience and instruction do it? Furthermore, for what reason does your resume need to tell somebody who you are first?

There's one awesome motivation behind why your resume target ought to be written in however much detail as could reasonably be expected. Notwithstanding separating you from different candidates, a decent resume target advises your manager all that he has to know. It gives him an extremely short depiction of you with the goal that he can see precisely what he's getting. What's more, it gives him a general thought of what sort of individual you are and how you can have an effect on his business.

But for what reason do you need a target when your resume just gives you a general thought of what you do and where you're from? A resume should just make them thing in a similar manner as a call sheet. That is your target. You can't anticipate that a spotter should skim over this passage since you composed it and left it blank.

It's organizations that need to discover progressively about you that place a top on what they call your 'offer letter.' If they're searching for someone who can show them something new, they'll hope to see a very much organized resume that sums up the entirety of your training and involvement with a way that gives them w hat they're missing while never saying it outright.

Why is a resume objective the most significant piece of your resume? Since your boss is perusing it for decisively that reason. He'll peruse your resume, note your experience and instruction, and afterward choose whether he should give you a meeting. On the off chance that he does, that will be founded on your resume objective, since it gives him all that he needs to choose that.

By following the 'rules' with regards to composing a resume objective, you're guaranteeing that you land that meeting and finding the activity. On the off potential for success that you don't have out from the group, it won't make any difference in the event that you attended a university and earned a Master's certificate in HR the executives. You may have an incredible resume, however on the off chance that it comes up short on work objective, your resume is worthless.
< p>

Your continue and your goal ought to be composed cautiously. On the off chance that they're feeling the loss of some data or have an 'Uh oh' in them, that is going to make your future business believe that he should call you back.

4 Walt Disney Quotes To Get You Through A Career Search

4 Walt Disney Quotes To Get You Through A Career Search Pexels Walt Disney wasn’t born into excellence. In fact, it was after he failed to sneak into the armed forces at age 16, and then drove ambulance in France for the Red Cross that he switched to pursuing a career as an artist. Like so many others, Disney didn’t immediately dive into a successful entrepreneurial career. In 1919 he started out as a newspaper artist. It wasn’t until December 21, 1937 that Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the first full-length animated film, was released in Los Angeles. After it produced an unimaginable $1.5 million, in spite of the Depression, Disney’s career finally took off into a world where dreams really do come true. Let’s take a look at what Disney has taught us about challenging job searches: 1. “If you can dream it, you can do it.” While Disney’s dreams brought flying carpets and a talking mouse to life; yours can take you to any career heights you work hard towards. However, putting limits on your career search by not applying to jobs you feel are out of reach, or not being willing to work your way up a notch because the top seems unobtainable, will stifle your efforts and success. If you’re missing just a few qualifications on a job description, don’t let it hold you back. You’re bigger than the words in the description. Start by customizing your cover letter and resume to highlight the skills you do have that make you a perfect fit. Dont let a #job description hold you back from your #career dreams. Click To Tweet Back this process up by networking into the company through LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook, actively commenting on and sharing posts. Networking is also a great way to find the hiring manager and begin connecting with them directly. Remember, if Disney hadn’t started working for that newspaper, he might never have drawn the iconic Mickey Mouse, inspiring so many for nearly a century. The same goes for landing your dream career. You have to start somewhere. Keep in mind, however, that applying to a position when you’re missing most of the necessary qualifications ends up wasting both yours and the company’s time. Instead, start working your way up by interning or applying for a position within the company where your experiences are currently a good match. 2. “The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing.” Sitting around talking about the job you hope to find won’t get you anywhere. Neither will only applying to a few places and stopping your process there. Fully immerse yourself in the career search by applying on job boards, company websites, and keeping an eye out on social media. Also, it you’re talking about finding a job, make sure you’re talking to the right people. You never know where connections might lead, so let friends, family, current co-workers, or even acquaintances know you’re searching for a job and the type of position you’d like to find. 3. “All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.” Many of us have to really dig down deep to find courage especially after a long, drawn out career search. Don’t let this vulnerability allow you to forget this process is about you finding your career path, not just about the company or interviewer choosing you. Courage comes in many forms during the career search process, but it’s most difficult during interviews. Don’t be afraid to ask interviewers questions to determine if the company/position is a good fit. Ask what their work-life balance policies are, what a typical workday looks like, and what the managers do to motivate employees. Its important to know if a #company is the right fit for you before accepting an offer. Click To Tweet If it doesn’t feel like a good fit for you, that’s OK. Respectfully declining an offer will save both you and the company time and money. 4. “I believe in being an innovator.” Our beloved Disney movies would never have made it to the big screen if Walt wasn’t an innovator. If you’re someone who has new ideas, methods, or products, put them out there. This is especially beneficial during the interview process. Let interviewers know you have a vision and plan to help their company grow. Rather than applying to a company, maybe, like Disney, you have an entrepreneurial spirit. Find a mentor in the same industry who will understand any obstacles you may encounter. Since they’re already successful, thanks to their innovative and assertive behaviors, they can help guide you through the difficult, but rewarding, process. You may not be looking to build an empire like Disney, but finding a career that fits your needs, both personal and professional, is a step towards building your life. Show employers you would be an asset to their company and team by sharing previous work situations where you excelled, or even mistakes that you’ve learned from. Let everyone see how you just keep moving forward. What tips/tricks do you have for getting through a challenging career search? Let us know!

Resume Writers Digest Im Obsessed With Accomplishments

Resume Writers' Digest Im Obsessed With Accomplishments Im working to put together a new training focused on gathering client accomplishments. I happened to be thumbing through (electronically, of course), a back issue of the Resume Writers Digest newsletter (the July/August 2001 to be exact), and I came across this From from the Editor column. Even now, 18 years later, its still timely, so Im reprinting it here. (I typed the text in below because I didnt think youd be able to read the screen shot.) Its All About Value What makes you worth the money people pay you? I was recently working with a client who was developing a proposal for a promotion. She was looking to add additional responsibilitiesand receive additional paybut was struggling to put a dollar value on the work. Specifically, she was worried about asking for more money than the other people with her job title were making. So I asked her if anyone else with her job title had the same qualifications. No, she answered. Were any of them looking to take on the kind of extra duties her promotion proposal entailed? No again. Then stop worrying, I told her. She was trying to compare apples and oranges. Her value to the company was greater than those with equal titles, but not equal responsibilities and ambition. Heres another way of thinking about it. Ask your clients this question: Would employers be willing to pay you more if you didmoreof one part of your job, or did itbetter? For salespeople, the answer is easy.If I sold more widgets than the other salespeople, my employer would be willing to pay me more.In fact, thats what a commission isextra payment for extra work. These are the achievements we try to draw out for our clients resumes. But think about this in relation to your own business. Which resumewriters make the most money? Usually, those who charge the higher rates. What enables them to charge higher rates? The value their clients pay is less than the value they receivein other words, those that can deliver for their clients what the clients want and cant get themselves. Want to make more money? Ask yourself what part of what you doif you did it betterwould clients be willing to pay you more to do? Then figure out a way to do it...and find out just howvalue-ableyour talents are. Think about it. ___________________________ By the way, there is a TON of golden information in the back issues of the Resume Writers Digest newsletter, which was published bimonthly from July 1999 through March 2005 and intermittently since then. If you are a Bronze member of BeAResumeWriter.com, you have access to the Archive of Back Issues. Its just ONE of the many benefits of membership for just $13/month! Join here.

Why December Isnt Such A Bad Time To Advertise A Job

Why December Isnt Such A Bad Time To Advertise A Job December is such a hectic time of year. Some people preparing for Christmas, others preparing for New Year and other celebrations, its hard to keep up. There has always been this myth about how people dont hire in December but we want to get this straight. Theres lots of reasons why December is a good time of year to advertise a vacancy, even if you have a position open in February, start planning now! Preparation Although you wont be necessary hiring someone in December, the overall hiring process can sometimes take longer than you expect. You may know that someone is getting ready to leave in January to start a new adventure or that you have a fresh new job opening that you want to prepare for. If you know you have a job opening coming up, its worth taking the time with your hiring process, this way you can ensure that you have the best candidate for the job. Some people leave their job advertisements until the very last minute we dont recommend this. The longer you have to advertise, the more detail you can put into your job advert, specifying exactly what you are looking for in a candidate. Its important to take in to consideration any booked holidays that the candidate may have. This may result in them not being available to work until January. Take into consideration how much notice they may have to provide. Theres no use advertising on 2nd January for a position you are planning to fill within a week! Annual Leave Lots of people book time off around Christmas to get organised, to spend time with family and some people just need to use their holidays up before the New Year. This makes it a perfect time to organise interviews with people, this way they dont need to try and get time off work, they can try to arrange it on the days they already have off. If you get in touch with someone who has a couple of weeks off over Christmas, this is the perfect opportunity to invite someone for a trial shift. Especially, as your staff may have time booked off themselves, you can give the candidate some of the work that needs doing and see how they settle in, how they manage with the workload and so on. Although you may be throwing them in at the deep end, this is a good way of getting to know candidates abilities. Christmas Antics Christmas parties and other celebrations during December and January are great opportunities to get to know your colleagues. The new candidate may settle in better due to the happy Christmas atmosphere and get to know the team well. Hiring someone just after the Christmas party means that they missed out on the annual party and sometimes these only happen once a year. (We all know how annoying they are to plan!) Secret Santa is also a great opportunity to be involved in too. The newbie will be trying their best to get to know the people around them in order to know what to buy. All of these little festivities are a great way of encouraging bonding between colleagues. If you have a happy office and a happy team, Im sure this will show in the quality of work. Temp Work People often look for temporary work during the winter months. This is because these are usually the only roles available and its a quick and easy solution to escaping unemployment. Im sure lots of candidates would be happy to see that the role you are advertising is a more secure opportunity. Perhaps you may be advertising a temp role anyway, Decembers a perfect opportunity to hire. Some people are looking for temp work to get them through the costly month of December, others are back from University or elsewhere trying to gain experience or fill their time Advantages of the myth Due to the myth, people may postpone their job-hunting until after Christmas. This way, you will receive a smaller candidate pool, enabling you to properly analyse each application and hopefully meet with more candidates, enabling you to get a better judgement. If you have a smaller candidate pool that you are not necessarily happy with, this gives you chance to go back to previous candidates who you think might suit this particular role, or candidates that you said you would keep in mind for the future. Perhaps you were being really organised and you dont need to hire the candidate until mid February, at least you still have time to advertise the role in January if worst comes to worst. If not, you can sit back and relax through the hectic month of December and the start to the new year knowing that you have filled your upcoming vacancy and you are positive that the candidate you have chosen is perfect for the role. If you have an internal recruiter or you hire someone elsewhere, the myth can mean that recruiters have a lot more spare time to focus on your role and therefore, they can take their time to source amazing candidates. Whether you have decided to start advertising or you are leaving it until January, Good Luck! Heres a little bit of advice on The Advantages of Using A Niche Job Board.

7 Job Interview Mistakes You Must Avoid - CareerAlley

7 Job Interview Mistakes You Must Avoid - CareerAlley We may get remuneration when you click on connections to items from our accomplices. I was once meeting an ongoing college alumni when his cellphone rang. Rather than saying 'sorry' and hushing the call, the youngster held up a finger to me, addressed the call, and continued to book a meeting for another activity with the lady on the opposite end. Obviously, I finished the meeting in that spot and didnt extend to him an employment opportunity. While that is a truly clear talking violation of social norms, youd be shocked what number of in any case savvy individuals do senseless things during a meeting. Here are seven different missteps you should abstain from during a prospective employee meet-up: Not Doing Pre-Interview Research Regardless of whether the organization you are meeting with makes furniture or rocket motor fuel, acclimate yourself with them in advance. You will seem clueless and badly arranged on the off chance that you know nothing about the organization. Not Talking Enough On the off chance that youre not completely responding to questions, appear to be excessively diverted, or are too anxious to even think about speaking, you may discover your meeting cut off in light of the fact that the potential business is baffled by your failure to convey. Answer questions completely and as really as could reasonably be expected. Lying About Your Past Numerous individuals who have been laid off attempt to bypass that reality on their resumes, just to be gotten some information about the two-year hole in their resume during the meeting. In the event that youve been laid off, speak the truth about it. Something else, your boss will without a doubt discover your untruth and wont believe you enough to enlist you. Knocking a Prior Boss Dont fall into the snare of criticizing a manager you used to work for, regardless of whether he made Darth Vader resemble a really hero. As referenced above, while you dont need to lie, you additionally need to abstain from offering explicit studies of his awful administration style. Badmouthers will in general do something very similar regardless of what work theyre at, and that considers ineffectively your character. Dressing Inappropriately Basically, on the off chance that I can see over your knee (ladies) or see your fighters (men), theres no chance youre landing this position. Being Afraid to Say I Dont Know Here and there a questioner will hurl out an unbelievable inquiry just to perceive how the individual responds. For whatever length of time that you clarify that youd converse with your manager about how to deal with it, its alright to state that youre not certain what youd do in a particular circumstance. Acting Overly Familiar Recall that you are on a prospective employee meet-up, not talking with a companion. Stay formal, address your questioner as Mr. or on the other hand Ms. (or on the other hand sir or maam), and dont talk about anything you wouldnt share with your grandma. Regardless of whether you find you and your questioner were in a similar brotherhood in school, you dont have the activity yet, so dont think back about that party you tossed senior year! Book review Smart Love - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog

Book audit Smart Love - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog I attempt to assemble contribution for the Happy At Work Project from numerous sources. Sites, books, motion pictures, magazines whatever may give me some new edge on what satisfies individuals at work. So please dont read a lot into it when I let you know, that I simply wrapped up a book called Smart Love: The Compassionate Alternative to Discipline That Will Make You a Better Parent Your Child a Better Person by Martha and William Pieper :o) I saw the title, and felt that any choice to teach may be a decent thing to think about, in the quest for approaches to make better workplaces. In reality, a lot of what is says CAN be transplanted from the universe of raising youngsters to that of cooperating at work. The undeniable thought NOT to take with you, is where supervisors assume the jobs of guardians and representatives become the youngsters. Where information, authority and obligation apparently lies just with certain individuals (the individuals who happen to be pioneers) and workers are relied upon to do as theyre told. Luckily this outlook is gradually vanishing. So back to the youngsters: The books most significant case is that you ought to never rebuff kids. This appears to be an extremely abnormal idea from the outset, and my first idea was, that without discipline, how might you direct a childs conduct away from that which is undesired, off-base or risky? However, heres their contention: 1: If you need your youngster to grow up cheerful and succesful, what the kid needs more than all else is an unshakeable internal bliss, a joy that originates from realizing that it has the genuine love. 2: When you rebuff youngsters, they feel terrible. Since all youngsters beleive that their folks are almighty, they reason that the guardians must need them to feel terrible. 3: Children at that point come to unwittingly look for circumstances where they feel terrible, for example by rehashing behavious that pushes them into difficulty. 4: Much of the issue conduct that guardians need to address in youngsters is consummately age-fitting and will stop all alone. For example, a 2-year old who cries each time the guardians leave the room is entirely typical, and rebuffing this will the youngster feel awful, and may even delay this conduct. 5: Whats significant is to comprehend a childs needs, and to act from those, not from some romanticized image of how a polite kid should act. The book DOES NOT contend, that you should let youngsters do anything. This isn't the leniency of youngster bringing up in the 70s. Or maybe, if a youngster should be directed away from some conduct, you should utilize what the creators call adoring guidelines, ie. making the youngster stop the conduct in a manner that doesn't rebuff the kid or cause it to feel awful. Curiously, they additionally propose that you dont reward youngsters for good conduct, since this will make the kid center more around the award than on its own explanations behind the great conduct. This an instance of extraneous versus inherent inspiration. As I would see it, the Smart Love approach finds some kind of harmony among permissivenes and the strong but fair affection schoold of restraining youngsters, neither of which appear to work quite well, and I am persuaded that, the creators are on to something significant. Their contentions are sponsored up all through with heaps of stories from their numerous long stretches of guiding guardians and kids. Anyway, what would that be able to move toward show us cooperating? Indeed, I believe that the possibility of a work environment without discipline is magnificent. A work environment where you could commit an error, and not be the subject of either unequivocal or understood discipline. A working environment dependent on and comprehension of representatives singular needs, and how those can be met. A working environment concentrated more on natural inspirations than on rewards or other outer prizes. What's more, incidentally, I figure this would bring about a working environment where representatives are NOT treated as kids. A debt of gratitude is in order for visiting my blog. In case you're new here, you should look at this rundown of my 10 most well known articles. What's more, in the event that you need increasingly incredible tips and thoughts you should look at our bulletin about satisfaction at work. Affording Healthcare Update On My Surgery Post

Affording Healthcare â€" Update On My Surgery Post A few thoughts since I wrote about paying for surgery when you dont have health insurance. First, I need to say that while I dont have health insurance, it isnt because I dont want it. I cant write about why I dont have health insurance, but from my readers I know that securing health insurance is not as easy as you might think. Get a job and get health insurance its pretty easy. But if you dont have a job there are two significant factors that preclude you from *easily* getting health insurance: Price. I know people who easily pay more than $1,000 each month for health insurance. This is not an option for everyone. I have readers of this blog who are just looking for $30 for groceries or their utility bill. Qualifications. Getting health insurance on your own usually means some contract nurse comes to your house to have you fill out forms, do blood work, and some other tests. A few weeks later you hear back. If the health insurance company thinks you are too risky for them, guess what? NO HEALTH INSURANCE FOR YOU! Worse than the Soup Nazi from Seinfeld. They own a racket and when you are on the other end, it SUCKS. So let me reiterate my post about how to pay for a surgery when you dont have insurance was NOT about how to get around health insurance, or to say that health insurance is bad or unnecessary. Were working on getting insurance, but we havent been able to yet. The post was more about: Letting you know that you can actually negotiate with the service providers (doctors and hospitals) to get SIGNIFICANT (50%+) discounts, and just sharing how SCREWED UP (the cost of) health care is if we can get 50%+ discounts by paying THAT DAY. Here are two comments that came on my Facebook post that triggered this followup: You are fortunate to be able to pay 3400 dollars out of your pocket in one payment. What of those that cant? I am very fortunate to be able to pay that out of pocket. We did have this planned and had time to figure out where the money was coming from that was definitely a benefit. But I realize that many people dont have $3,400 sitting around. My point in the post was just to share that you COULD save that much money if you could figure out how to get the payment together. Most people (me included, before this experience) dont know that you could even question this big hairy institution. and It is great that youre able and willing to self-pay, but what is something happens and your bill is in the hundreds of thousands or even millions? I sincerely hope that never happens to you, but it happens to a lot of people. If you self-pay and dont have your own insurance, then doesnt that really mean that youre shifting the risk to those who Read More are paying federal taxes? And how different is that than being an advocate for single payer? Again, this is why Im writing this clarification. Im not saying dont get health insurance because you can save 50% by paying upfront. Im saying Did you know that you could even negotatiate? Im writing more to the people who cant get or dont have health insurance which is A LOT of people. so thats it. Heres one more LAME update. The doctors office coded the procedure wrong, so the quote from the hospital was $5,000 low. That meant we got hit with an additional out-of-pocket $2,500 charge (if we wanted to get the 50% discount) that we werent expecting. Fun? Absolutely not. Wish I had health insurance right now, but for us the discount is the only option we have (other than sitting on double the amount and making payments until my kids move out). Are You Branding Yourself As A Job Stalker - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Are You Branding Yourself As A Job Stalker - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Nobody means to brand themselves as a job stalker yet job seekers accidentally do this every day. What you view as innocently being proactive and following-up can easily cross the razors edge into crazy stalker, without you realizing what youve done. Being proactive is appreciated, if youre the top candidate it confirms to the hiring manager that he/she has made the right choice. But what if youre not the top candidate? If youre not the top candidate, being proactive is often ignored, because you arent a priority of the hiring manager. You might have even been told to follow up in a couple weeks, but if your follow up doesnt get a response, continued follow up is unlikely to improve your chances. Worse, it usually makes you look like a job stalker. Here are 5 things that seem like follow up but brand you as a job stalker: Leaving a voice mail every day (or even every other) until you reach someone: Just because the hiring manager told you they would contact you in 2 weeks, doesnt mean they will. Things change, priorities change, and if youre not the top candidate, youre not the hiring priority like it or not. Calling constantly wont change this, but heres what it will do if you were still being consider or on the bubble, youve killed your chances by continuously calling. Because you sound like a stalker and maybe a little crazy. Calling without leaving a voice mail repeatedly: News Flash Businesses have caller ID too. Calling just to follow up more than once: When you call just to follow up dont expect a return call because just following up adds no value to the hiring manager (nor HR). When you call just to follow up more than once, now youre wasting the hiring managers (or HRs) time. When you keep calling just to follow up, youve crossed the line into stalker city. Sounding annoyed (or upset) on Voice Mail because you havent been called back: When youre searching for a job, youd better develop a thick skin if you seem the least bit annoyed, youve blown any chance you might have had with the hiring manger. Sure youre upset that you werent called back when HR or the hiring manager promised. Simple rule dont call if youre pissed. Emailing to follow up repeatedly: Emailing repeatedly to follow up is even worse, because you leave a paper trail for an employer to remember how much of their time youve wasted. As an added bonus, that paper trail reminds HR that youve acted like a job stalker. Many candidates ignore the lessons they should have learned by dating in high school that no response is an answer. It is closure youre just not listening. Thats not to say that follow up is a bad idea its not. But for Gods sake, add some value when you call if you dont want to be ignored. Calling just to follow up adds zero value to hiring managers or HR, but instead wastes their time. And following up, even when you provide value eventually turns into job stalking. Heres a hint empty follow up quickly turns you into a stalker. But the more value you provide, the less likely your contacts will be ignored. So the less likely youll seem like a job stalker. Too Much Information The Case of the Job Interview Marla Gottschalk

Too Much Information The Case of the Job Interview Marla Gottschalk I recently finished reading “Blink” by Malcolm Gladwell â€" a very clever book which poses the theory that we don’t need to process the entire story to actually grasp the “gestalt” of that story. Of course, the real skill lies in knowing what information to consider and what information to ignore. While reading, I couldn’t help but think of how this concept of making decisions on thinner “slices” of behavior or information could apply to workplace practices. Is less information better? Well, in some cases it might be. Consider the traditional employment interview for a moment. When you think of all the business practices we openly malign (yearly performance reviews for example) employment interviews have really escaped their fair share of deserved criticism. Why is this? One reason is that employment interviews have simply been a fact of work life â€" an accepted way of doing business. It seems that when you consider the prospect of a new job, an interview is always the first thing you anticipate. The Down Side You might think the run of the mill interview does a pretty good job at doing what it was supposed to do. But this is not the case â€" they are a bit like a living fossil in the world of business practices. In actuality, the predictive validity of the standard interview is quite low, primarily attributed to subjective error. Shocked? As told to me by a professor, People by nature are hopelessly curious. The idea of making decisions about a candidate without speaking with them in person makes us feel uncomfortable, even at the cost of making our decisions less accurate. We just seem to want all of the extra information that can run us in the wrong direction and resist evaluating candidates based upon key qualifications, tests and work history alone. We allow ourselves to think that we just know who is right for the job. Thats the first mistake we make. The Bright Side Researchers have investigated practices that help improve the hit rate of the employment interview as a selection technique. Of course, these practices attempt to keep decision makers on track and help them focus on information critical to the job in question. The practices are designed to limit the subjectivity of the interview process and idiosyncratic interviewer practices. You can read more about that here, if you wish. Utilize the time with a candidate wisely. Here are some key findings from past research which you can apply within your organization: Finalize the job description. Be sure it is accurate and up to date. Jobs will evolve and “reshape” over time. Be sure that all of the current tasks and responsibilities are captured. Utilize the job description to hammer out a set of meaningful questions. I would suggest a set of core questions about the job in question. Use “critical incidents” for the job as a basis for questions. These are behaviors that separate excellent employees from the pack. Pose the same questions to all the candidates. This allows a comparison of answers after all of the interviews are completed â€" a fascinating process. Use behaviorally anchored rating scales to evaluate core areas of skill or knowledge. This process helps make ratings concerning candidates more straight forward. Learn more about that here. Train interviewers to convey accurate information about the job and the organization. That way a candidate can decide if there is a real fit between person and job. If possible offer an RJP (Realistic Job Preview) before the interview begins. Have more than one interviewer evaluate a candidate. A panel works well if you have the manpower. More than one view of a candidate can begin an active discussion about a candidate’s qualifications for the job in question. Pause, digest, then decide. Train interviewers to delay the actual decision until after the interview and all relevant candidate information has been reviewed. A little time and reflection can go a long way â€" no gut feelings allowed. Interviews aren’t going away, that’s a given. So lets manage the information overflow wisely.
