Running in Place

Running in Place Running in Place Running in PlaceThey are obscure today, but there welches a time when Glenn Cunningham, Arne Andersson, and Gunder Hgg were household names. Those men, and dozens like them, were probing the boundaries of menschengerecht performance as they sought to become the first person to run a mile in less than four minutes. After twenty years of gradually inching closer to the mark, the feat was finally accomplished on May 6, 1954, by the British runner Roger Bannister, who then held the world record for all of 46 days.Over the past couple decades, engineers who designed and developed combine-cycle gas turbine generating plants have pursued their own records. Those plants comprise a Brayton-cycle gas turbine which sends its hot exhaust to a boiler to make steam to drive a Rankine-cycle electric power steam turbine. Thus, such plants wring two units of work from one unit of fuel.By themselves, the largest single-cycle gas turbines are astonishingly efficient, w ith thermal efficiencies in the 30-to-40 percent range, going as high as 44 percent. But for years the goal for combined-cycle plants was to reach a thermal efficiency of 60 percent, which is about twice the efficiency of a standard steam turbine plant. As the major manufacturers in the market for gas turbines for electric generation, Siemens and General Electric poured money into the chase and put their reputations on the line. The mark was finally set by Siemens at a plant in Irsching, Germany, in 2011, where the combined cycle SCC5-800H unit reached a thermal efficiency of 60.75 percent, with an electrical output of 578 MW.The technology continues to improve, as does the output. Last year, General Electric reported 62.22 percent for its 9HA.01 combine cycle plant in Bouchain, France, with an output of 594 MW. And now manufacturers are targeting 65 percent thermal efficiency, approaching thermodynamic limits set by Carelend.Even now, however, unterstellung large combined-cycle gas turbine units are the most efficient heat engines in mankinds thermodynamic history. As technological and engineering feats, those efficiency marks are impressive.Looking at the current and future course of the gas turbine industry, however, there are signs that record-breaking efficiency together with rock-bottom operating costs will not be enough to actually grow the electric generation portion of the market.High and MightyTo get full sense of the direction of the industrynot just for electric power generation but also for marine and mechanical applications and jet engines for commercial and military aviationeach year I turn to Forecast International, a market research firm in Newton, Conn. FI computes for me a financial picture of the gas turbine industry, its history, current state, and forecasted future.Using its computer models and extensive data base, FIs Stuart Slade has computed the value of worldwide gas turbine manufacturing production from 1991 to 2016, and has predicted values to 2031. (FI considers production figures to be more accurate than reported sales.)In 2016, for instance, FI calculated the value of production for the total aviation market to be $66 tausend milliarden, a small increase over the $65.6 calculated for 2015. That flat growth is due to a split in the two major sectors in the aviation market. The value of production for military aviation, where many innovations are first proven, declined to $7.5 billion in 2016, from $8 billion the year before and $8.4 billion in 2014. Far larger is the commercial aviation sector, and that saw steady growth, to $58.6 billion in 2016 from $57.6 billion in 2015 and $56.4 billion the year before that. Indeed, commercial aviation accounts for more than 75 percent of the total gas turbine market.Whats more, that share is projected to rise, due to the booming market in commercial airliners. Between them, Boeing and Airbus built more than 1,400 aircraft last year, and about a third the price kalenderta g for each plane was devoted to the cost of the jet engines. FI projects that the worldwide value of production for commercial aviation gas turbines will increase by 33 percent over the next 13 years to reach $80 billion in 2030. The Economist reported recently that analysts believe engine companies will see more than $1 trillion in sales over the next two decades, and Forecast Internationals projections suggest that this is a conservative estimate. If the projection for the jet engine market and the rest of the gas turbine industry are on the mark, by 2030 commercial aviation will account for 82 percent of the total value of production.Right now, the major engine manufacturers are competing to win contracts for the latest single-aisle aircraft, the Airbus A320neo and Boeing 737MAX. Two new fuel efficient turbofan jet engines are dominating the Pratt Whitney geared fan PW1100G and the CFM International LEAP, each in the 20,000-to-30,000-pound thrust range.Airlines are reporting some problems with the new engines, but nothing major. For instance, some early versions of the PW1100G engine required longer start-up times, but that issue seems to have been resolved. There have been no problems reported with the new, innovative fan drive gear system. The promise of these new engines is greater efficiency, and both the PW1100G and the LEAP engines are meeting that promise. Airlines flying those new engines are reporting fuel savings of 15 percent on shorter flights and up to 20 percent on longer flights. Some are able to add new destinationsbecause of aircrafts longer range with these fuel efficient engines. This, combined with significant engine noise reduction (especially with the PW geared fan) is a technological win-win.Reversal of FortuneWhile the outlook for commercial aviation gas turbines is bright, the non-aviation segment is decidedly clouded. According to Forecast International, production of gas turbines for marine systems such as cruise ships has grown ra pidly after a sharp decline in the Great Recession and the value stood at $580.9 million last year. Mechanical drives, such as those used along natural gas pipelines to power compression stations, had a value of production of $1.7 billion in 2016, about 2 percent less than the year before. The largest portion of the non-aviation sector is made up of the electric power gas turbines we lauded at the beginning of this article. FIs data shows that the value of production for the electric power gas turbines was $8.8 billion in 2016, down from $9.8 billion in 2015.This level of production is a kampfstark departure from the robust projections from a few years ago, and Forecast International has even revised its value of production data from the previous few years based on production figures reported by manufacturers. The value of production was higher than previously reported before 2012, but is markedly lower since. In fact, the value of production in 2016 was almost $10 billion less than what FI projected this time last year.Whats more, the projections for gas turbines produced for electric generation are now similarly revised downward, erasing an astonishing $123 billion in value of production. Such revisionsand revised prospectsdont occur without reason. Based on input from FIs Stu Slade and other data, I believe that there are several interlinked trends affecting orders. To start with, while analysts have focused on the growing demand for electricity worldwidea demand that gas turbines are poised to meetthe average output of each individual gas turbine unit is also increasing, and at a rate thats faster than that of electricity demand. This means that the requirement for additional power can be honigwein by fewer individual units, Slade said. The growth of electricity demand is not translating into a proportional demand for new plants.Next, the remarkable efficiency of combined-cycle plants is working against gas turbine production. The extra power that a combined -cycle plant can wring from a given unit of fuel comes from the addition of a steam-generation system and steam turbine, not a gas turbine. While that efficiency is good for utilities and great for the environment, it reduces the number of gas turbines that must be produced to generate the same amount of electricity. There are a couple extrinsic factors, as well. According to Slade, in Europe and other parts of the world, the heavy emphasis on reducing emissions and resource consumption has resulted in large subsidies for the renewables sector. Indeed, Slade said, these subsidies are so great that it forces conventional power generation to be operated at a loss under certain situations. As a result, new gas turbine power generation facilities have been mothballed on completion without ever generating a watt of power. A few years ago when I toured the Irsching power plant in Germany, a representative of E.ON, the plants owner, told me that they were running it only a few hours a day in response to the unfavorable German rate structure. In the longer term, Slade said, increasing power demand will be met by opening up these mothballed plants, thus causing the medium-term dip in demand. In effect, there is a bow-wave of reserve capacity that is limiting demand. Finally, in spite of reports to the contrary, coal power is not dead. Many countries in Eastern Europe and Asia still rely on their coal resources and build coal-fired power plants when they need to add generating capacity. In the United States, the uncertainty over the long-term policy toward coal power has raised the prospect of plant owners essentially running their coal-powered generating assets into the ground, producing as much cheap (but dirty) power as they can, while they can.All of this impacts the prospects for the gas turbine market. The Case for OptimismIn recent years, the use of gas turbines for electric generation has had many boosters, myself included. The energy writer Vaclav Smil once listed t he laudable aspects of gas turbines, among them They are exceptionally reliable and relatively easy to maintain their service is almost instantly available they can reach full load within a few minutes and hence are perfect for covering peak load or other sudden fluctuations in demand because they are air cooled, they (unlike steam turbogenerators) do not require any arrangements for water cooling. It is difficult to dispute that gas turbines provide some of the cheapest dispatchable power available to grid managers. The U.S. Energy Information Administration recently tabulated the latest estimates of costs of new U.S. electrical power plants, giving values of averaged levelized and overnight costs. Levelized cost of electricity represents the per-kilowatt hour cost of building and operating a new generating plant over an assumed financial life and duty cycle, thus giving an average cost of generating electricity over a period of years. Overnight cost per kilowatt is the cost of a co nstruction project (i.e. the power plant) if no interest is incurred during construction, as if the project was completed overnight. The EIA looked at both simple and combined-cycle gas turbine power plants burning natural gas, as well as conventional coal and nuclear plants and renewables such as wind, solar, and hydroelectricity. Both types of gas turbine plants were cheaper to build (based on overnight costs) than any other power source, around half the cost of renewables, one-third the cost of a new coal plant, and at least one-sixth the cost of a nuclear plant. In terms of levelized cost of energy, combined cycle plants edged out all others, including windeven though wind turbines have no fuel costsand were about 40 percent cheaper than coal plants.Gas turbine power plants also have the advantage of dispatchability which wind, hydroelectric, and solar often do not. A recent econometric study of renewable electric power implementation, led by David Popp at Syracuse University, co ncluded that in the 26 countries they looked at, the use of fast-reacting fossil technologies such as gas turbines to hedge against variability of electrical supply made it more likely to result in the successful investment and use of renewables. The takeaway here is that gas turbine power plants are cost effective and can provide a necessary backup to the variability of renewable power plants. To me, all that argues for better prospects for gas turbines in the electric generation sector than Forecast International projects. The electric grid is going to be ever more unsettled as new blocks of intermittent power are added. Gas turbines combine low cost and fast reaction time in a way that will enable the grid to handle winds dying down unexpectedly or unpredicted heavy clouds diminishing solar power output.Even so, these revisions are a valuable lesson to engineers not to let their enthusiasm for a technology run ahead of the market forces that shape what does and doesnt get built.

Death to the consumer mentality How to start fattening your wallet

Death to the consumer mentality How to start fattening yur walletDeath to the consumer mentality How to start fattening your walletAt some point, you may have come across the term consumer mentality. Its the mindset many of us have, whether we realize it or not.And its no surprise that consumption of material items become so important to us, when advertisements are ingrained in our DNA from the moment we are born.According to Forbes, digital absatzwirtschaft experts estimate that most Americans are exposed to around 4,000 to 10,000 ads each day.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreAnd as someone who works in marketing full-time, I see the value of advertising, but also think its a bit out of hand too. However, I think that is only a piece to our mostly-developed consumer mentalities. What is the consumer mentality? The consumer mentality is simple and most can agree it typically has a ne gative connotation to it.But what does it really mean to have this mindset?I think there are two parts to the consumer mentality. To me, part one is about owning and having material items or constantly consuming the latest and greatest. We want the latest, the newest, and the largest, otherwise we lose interest fast. But this triggers the vicious cycle of constantly spending money to fulfill those consumption desires. You may have even come across this quote or other variations (it was in the movieFight Clubin a variation of the below), which holds even more truth today than ever before.Too many people spend money they havent earned to buy things they dont want, to impress people they dont like.- Will RogersBesides just wanting to fill the void of becoming bored with these possessions, its usually also to do a few other thingsKeep up with the joneses (aka not get left behind what others have)Fulfill some instant gratification (I need it now)Need to impress others of all my things (show ing off)Addicted to spending and shopping (Oniomania)And for part two of the consumer mentality, its that your only interest is to just consume, forgetting the notion that you should be producing too.Meaning there is a lack of restricting your spending and zero thought about where money should go outside of living expenses, bills, and buying depreciating assets for temporary satisfaction.Should you stop consuming? This isnt to say you should stop consuming completely as it does keep the economy running when people are buying.Consuming and spending keeps businesses open and the money machine turning. But Im also not an economist or well-versed in this area, so I wont pretend I know everything about how the economy works.Plus, why shouldnt you treat yourself occasionally?Buying something you like or upgrading possessions with your hard-earned money is your prerogative to do so.And not everyone needs to adopt aminimalist lifestyleto be financially savvy.Instead, learning to prioritize wh en to spend will be key. What I do know is, the personal finances in America are generally pretty bad.I think a big portion of this (outside of ourstudent debtcrisis and fast rising inflation) is having too much of a consumer mentality.I mean, just look at some of thesepersonal finance statisticsto get a taste of what is going on.20% of Americans dont save any of their annual income at all and even those who do save arent putting away a lot.(CNBC)43% of Americans spend more than they receive each month borrow and use credit cards to finance the shortfall.(Federal Reserve)Transition to the investor mentalityHaving an extreme consumer mentality can put your finances into some serious trouble.Whether that is excess consumer debt, spending more than you make, not having an emergency fund for unexpected situations, or just not prepping for your future (retirement savings, for example). And breaking the consumer mentality is also not easy, especially if youve been in this trap for years. Its going to take work to break the consumer habit, but transitioning to the investor mentality will be key for building your financial stability and potential wealth.Putting bad financial habits to rest can take you a short time or may take a lot longer with some minor consumer relapses. Its okay, because making any effort at all and realizing your consumer mentality is a problem, puts you light years ahead of the vast majority. So why is the investor mentality the way to go?Helps you build and save money (Fattening your wallet and bank account)Eliminates high interest consumer debt (and keeps the debt off)Creates more financial stabilityBuilds long-term wealth for your futureHelps you get unstuck financiallyThe steps to develop the investor mentalityAs Ive stated above, spending money in moderation is okay.Additionally, not everyone needs to be an extreme investor where you become some expert or guru.Instead, you should be adopting an investor mindset from the broad sense to minimize y our consumption and increase production of assets that will help youbuild wealth. When I was working on fixing my mindset, I was actually stuck between a consumer and investor mentality.I was never a huge consumer (I like nice things and still do, but rarely buy things for myself), but also was not approaching things with an investor mindset (other than contributing to a basic 401k).Nothing below is rocket science or any special secrets.Like most of my content, its straightforward advice. But, these were the steps that helped me develop an investor mentality.Actually make it a priority to make changes If you dont dedicate time or prioritize breaking the consumer mentality, its not going to happen. You are shifting your entire mindset when you want to think like an investor and its not something you can passively do and expect results.Like most things in life, you need towant itandwilling to worktowards your goal.See where all your money is going As you get started, you must figure out where all your money is currently going. This means making a budget, make use of otherpersonal finance tools, and keep track of money coming in and going out.Without this picture, youre trying to make changes in the dark. For you to begin the investor mindset, you have to be managing your finances with precision.Evaluate why you feel the need to consume You also need to get a good look in the mirror as well and figure out why you feel the need to consume. What feelings does making purchases do for you?How do you feel after? What is the driving force behind any excess consumption?Find the reasoning for your consumer mindset. It may not fix everything, but it can help you understand the whys when you start to evaluate.Focus on what financial goals you may have If you start making financial goals and focus on making your goals a reality, it can help you shape your investor mindset.Of course, there is no guarantee because your mentality and commitment to your goals has to exist too.But by cr eating goals, writing them down, and setting a plan in motion, it can help stay the course and focused on them.Start reading investing books A great way to break the consumer mentality is to start reading some investing and money books. These open your mind and makes it easy to learn about great financial habits. And not all investing books are overly complicated or difficult to read.I think one of the best books to start with isRich Dad, Poor Dad. A simple, yet informative book that set the groundwork for my shift to an investor mentality.Practice asking yourself questions Besides the above, youll need to begin thinking like an investor and ask yourself some questions when it comes to purchases. This habit wont happen overnight, but make it a note to practice. What do I mean?Well here are some examplesInstead asking, How much does it cost?ask Whats my rate of return?Instead of saying, I cant afford to invest state, I cant afford to not investInstead of saying, Ill worry about it later, state, Ill set myself up now, so I dont have to worry laterInstead of saying, Look at what I can buy now, you should be saying, Look what my money can do for meThose are just some examples, but you should approach purchases and your money with strategy and how it benefits you in the long run.Final thoughtsMy aggressive title, Death to the Consumer Mentality was meant to catch your eye.Again, I may be playing too much with a clickbait-type of title considering I dont think ALL consumption should sie out. However, I find our society as a whole has a consumer mentality problem that needs to transition into an investor mentality. The financial troubles and some of data of our society is enough to backup that observation. And I totally understand not everyone has the means currently to become an investor, even in the broader sense of the term. But, we all have the opportunity to break the consumer mentality and get on a financial path of more financial stability and growth. You also shouldnt feel expected to be the next investing titan like Warren Buffett or that you should never buy anything for yourself ever again. But you should make it a priority to learn what brings you joy and how to set yourself up for a better financial life. This article originally appeared on Invested Wallet. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Riding Instructor Certification

Riding Instructor CertificationRiding Instructor CertificationWhile certification is a requirement for many European countries, it is not required for riding instructors in the United States or in Canada. Certified riding instructors teach students about horse behavior, how to get results from horses with different personalities, and they know how to evaluate rider positions and techniques when theyre saddled up. More importantly, they can make riding fun for the student and match up a rider with the right horse. If these factors are important to you, then you may want to consider becoming certified. There are quite a few options for anyone who wants to enhance their credentials. While this isnt a complete list, here are some of the best-known certification programs for riding instructors. American Riding Instructors Association The American Riding Instructors Association (ARIA) certifies riding instructors in 15 different disciplines including distance riding, dressage, driving, eventing, hunt seat, hunt seat on the flat, mounted patrol training officer, recreational riding, reining, foxhunting, saddle seat, show jumping, side saddle, stable management and western (pleasure equitation). The anfangsbuchstabe certification in a discipline costs $595 and consists of oral, written and practical tests. This portion involves the candidates submission of a skills video on DVD. Re-certification is required twice more in the discipline at 5-year intervals, and this renewal course is offered at a cost of $350 each time. Being an ARIA-certified instructor gives you nationally-recognized credentials and puts you in the Directory of ARIA Certified Instructors on the organizations website. Certified Horsemanship Association The Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA) was established in 1967 and has certified more than 30,000 riding instructors, barn managers and trail guides. The organization offers a 3-year certification after completion of a week-long clinic. Du ring the clinic, the candidate must pass written tests, riding evaluations, practice lessons and attend seminars. Instructor certification is available in a variety of specialties including English riding instructor, Western riding instructor, trail guide instructor, equine facility management, vaulting instructor, driving instructor and instructor for disabled riders. A certified instructor must also complete at least 25 hours of continuing education credit every three years to keep their certification current. Initial certification through the CHA costs around $200 and re-certification is $75. Yearly memberships are $60 and lifetime memberships cost $750. Centered Riding Centered Riding, a program founded by Sally Swift, offers 4 levels of certification for its member instructors. Level 1 and 2 instructors are qualified to apply the principles of centered riding within their discipline. Level 3 instructors are qualified to teach open clinics. Level 4 instructors can teach open clinics, instructor courses, and instructor update clinics. To begin the certification path an instructor must have at least 1 year of teaching experience, meet riding skill requirements, participate in at least one open clinic and complete a 7-day certification course. Costs may vary based on level and where the course is taking place. Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International The Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH International) offers certification to therapeutic riding instructors who work with special needs riders. The organization was founded in 1969 as the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association. The group has more than 880 member centers and more than 8,000 members around the world. These members support more than 66,000 people with special needs in horse-related activities and therapeutic programs. Three levels are offered for therapeutic instructors registered, advanced, and master. PATH Inte rnational also offers certification for vaulting instructors and driving instructors. The certification process involves submission of 25 hours of teaching video, obtaining current CPR and first aid certifications, and attending a multi-day on-site instructor workshop and certification class. The application fee for the PATH International certification program is $65. Continuing education credit hours and CPR/first aid renewals are required each year to maintain certification. U.S. Dressage Federation The U.S. Dressage Federation (USDF) offers an Instructor/coach program for the discipline of dressage. The three certifications available are training/first level, second level and third/fourth level. A pre-certification course is available and serves as a practice exam and critique for those seeking certification. Certification requirements include USDF membership, a minimum ofthree years of teaching experience, current first aid certification, letters of recommendation from indus try professionals and attendance at a certification class. Successful applicants must achieve 70% or higher in each area of the certification exam. Certification through the USDF costs $750 for the training/first level exam, $750 for the second level and $650 for the third/fourth level exam. Sixteen hours of continuing education credit are required each year to maintain certification. U.S. Hunter Jumper Association The U.S. Hunter Jumper Association (USHJA) offers a trainer certification program for the discipline of hunt seat riding. Certification involves passing a written exam, attending a trainer certification program clinic (or completion of the zugnglich option) and having three years of prior experience as a trainer/instructor. Provisional trainer status is available for those who have not yet achieved the three years of required experience. The application fee for a USHJA license is $100 and the exam fee is $225. The online course is available at a cost of $200 and cons ists of 5 hours of videos and quizzes. The online option also includes a six-month subscription to the video library at EquestrianCoach.com. The association will approve the application and send an email log in code with your exam credentials. In order to receive certification, you must pass with at least 85% or higher within six months of the time the exam email was sent. Certification must be maintained and updated once every five years. British Horse Society The British Horse Society (BHS) has more than 100,000 members in the U.K. It was founded in 1947. The BHS offers a widely respected certification path for instructors. Certification requirements include several levels of basic competency evaluations and providing documentation of training experience. The first level is BHS Assistant Instructor, followed by BHS Intermediate Instructor, BHS Instructor and ultimately the rarely achieved the highest level - Fellow of the BHS. All certification candidates must be BHS members and pay significant examination fees for each level. Costs for coaching certification courses sortiment from 350 to 600. Benefits of Certification There are several benefits to being a certified riding instructor. First is safety. Many people who have taken courses to become certified are able to give riding lessons safely because they have gone through certain safety measures and processes. Secondly, certified trainers may command a higher price compared to someone who isnt. A stable or farm may be more likely to hire someone with certification because that may mean more money for their business, too.

The Function of a Modeling Mother Agency

The Function of a Modeling Mother Agency The Function of a Modeling Mother Agency When you first begin pursuing a  modeling career you will likely hear the term mother agent or mother agency. What exactly is a mother agency and what does a mother agency or agent do? Is a mother agency something you must have when starting out as a model? And, if so, how do you get one? Almost all professional models have more than one modeling agency representing them. For example, supermodels like Naomi Campbell, Coco Rocha or Tyra Banks will have one agency that represents them in New York, another agency in Paris, and another in Milan, Tokyo and so on. With so many agencies working on behalf of one model things can get a little confusing so there needs to be one main agency that will oversee everything. This main agency is considered to be the mother agency.   Normally, a mother agency is the first agency you begin working with when you start your modeling career. A mother agent can also be a scout that discovered you and helped you get your start.   A mother agency will help you learn the industry and start building your modeling portfolio or book. A good mother agency will provide advice and guidance on the best direction for your career. They may also promote you to photographers and clients in your local area so that you can book jobs and start building your book with tests and tearsheets.   Mother Agents Are Protective of Your Modeling Career A mother agency will be very protective of its models just the way a mother bear would be with its cubs. The founder of Ford Models, the late Eileen Ford, was one of the most respected mother agents in the industry. New models actually lived in Eileens personal residence in New York City and had strict rules to live by. Eileen Fords expert management and care for her models was legendary and made all the difference in the success of her models and her agency. Mother Agents Only Get Paid When You Do If you live in a smaller market outside of New York, Paris, Milan or Tokyo, your mother agency will likely try to promote you to bigger markets. If your mother agency is successful in obtaining representation for you then it will receive a commission from the bigger agency based on the amount you earn. Typically, an agency will retain 20% of your gross earnings as its commission for finding you work. Then, from that 20%, they will pay your mother agent half or 10% of your gross earnings. Some agencies in the Asian markets can take a 30 - 40% commission, but these details will all be sorted out in written modeling contracts before you travel. A Good Mother Agent Understands the Industry Rather than focusing on just their own market a good mother agent will need to have excellent connections to outside agencies and a good understanding of how the various markets do business since requirements for models can vary greatly around the world. A mother agent will also have important insider information such as, which agencies pay their models in a timely manner, which agencies have the best bookers, which agencies are the most respected in their markets, and other important information that will help your career.   How to Get an Experienced Mother Agent Is having a mother agency a good idea? Yes, yes, yes! A mother agency is there to guide and protect you. They have experience and knowledge of the industry you simply wont have when you are first starting out. The tricky part, though, is finding a good one. This can be very difficult if you live in a small market.   A good place to start would be a professional model scouting company like ModelScouts.com.  All the agents at ModelScouts have been mother agents for over 30 years and fully understand all aspects of the modeling industry from modeling contracts, travel arrangements, overseas accommodations, work visas in foreign countries and more.

A list of the eight core values that I live by

A list of the eight core values that I live by A list of the eight core values that I live by Your character is defined by values. And your core values are the result of your behavior. Aristotle said it best:“Men acquire a particular quality by constantly acting in a particular way.”For example, when you always tell the truth, you become an honest person. It’s as simple as that. And yet, we collectively underestimate the importance of values. We think our values have everything to do with how we are perceived. But that’s not why values matter.Values have a great impact on our inner world. They define us. They form the foundation of our character. And since you have to live with yourself, your values should be one of the most important things in your life. But what if you don’t have values? Or what if you’ve never thought about setting your own core values? There are great risks involved with living without values. You risk become a faceless human that becomes indistinguishable from every single other faceless person that has ever lived. And before you know it, you ado pt the values of other people. That’s how we become dependent on our parents, friends, or spouse. We can’t let our identity depend on the identity of someone else. That’s why recently sat down to define my own personal core values to get things straight for myself. I recommend you to do the same. Once you know who you are in life, you stop trying to be who you are not. That gives you tranquility. Here are my values: Authenticity - Be the same person at every occasion in life. Don’t act differently in front of your parents, friends, co-workers, in-laws, and strangers. Stay your true self. And never be afraid of other people’s judgments. Truthfulness - Tell the truth. Always. Especially when it comes to your own life. Don’t have money? Don’t pretend that you’re wealthy. Never went to college? Own it. Be honest about who you are and what you’ve done. You’ll be able to look at yourself in the mirror with pride. Joyfulness - Life is short. Do things that bring you joy. And NEVER do something you hate for longer than is necessary. Enjoy the small things. Music, other people, working out, walking, laying down, reading, and so forth. Curiosity - Get to the bottom of everything that you do. Not because you must. But because it’s fun to know things. Life is fascinating. Acknowledge it. And then, try to understand it. But leave it at trying. Some things can’t be understood. But you can still admire it. Responsibility - Own your actions, mistakes, and current life situation. Understand what’s in your control, and fully own it. Don’t like something? Change it. But don’t take responsibility for things that are not on your plate. Focus on yourself. What other adults do is not your concern, nor your responsibility. Love - Build intimate and deep relationships with a few people. Depth matters more than breadth. Spend more time with your spouse than your co-workers. Get to know your siblings on a deeper level. Have two or three friends that you spend your time with. Love your family. The people you see every day should get your highest priority. Fearlessness - Don’t fear the future. And don’t be afraid of what people you don’t care about think of you. Only care about what you and the people you love think about you. Everything else is noise. Have dignity. Do the right thing and don’t fear the rest. Loyalty - Even though you might not see your old friends, co-workers, team members, stay loyal. Once you build a bond with someone, don’t break it unless it’s necessary. But most importantly, stay loyal to yourself. Never sacrifice your own mental well-being for others. Treat yourself like you treat someone you love. I don’t need more or fewer values than this. The list is long enough to live a rich, strong, and fearless life. And it’s short enough to remind yourself of these things.Remember: Your values must be in line with who you are.Never copy someone else’s values or search for “core values list” on Google. Inspiration is okay- but copying is not.Look inside yourself. Cultivate self-awareness (I’ve created a list of 20 questions that can help with that).Find the values that already exist inside of you - and strengthen them. John C. Maxwell, the author of The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, said it best:“When values, thoughts, feelings, and actions are in alignment, a person becomes focused and character is strengthened.”Pick your values. Stick to them. And watch as your character is formed. Once that happens, you’ll never want to be anything else but yourself. This  article  first appeared on  Darius Foroux.

Salary Negotiation Tips Employer Reneging on a Verbal Salary Agreement

Salary Negotiation Tips Employer Reneging on a Verbal Salary Agreement Salary Negotiation Tips Employer Reneging on a Verbal Salary Agreement How can I get my employer to honor the commitment for a pay raise made at the time of my promotion? Q: I’ve been with the same company for 15 years. Recently I’ve been promoted to manage a department in two different divisions. My commute varies between an hour and an hour and a half, depending on my schedule. At the time of my promotion, we agreed on a salary increase. This new pay scale has yet to start and I’ve been notified that it may not be possible to pay me the agreed upon amount. What are my options now?A: Your 15-year track record allows you the privilege of demanding that the company actually come through with what they promised. Had you been there for just a short period of time, things would be different. But you’ve demonstrated your loyalty through the years and now it’s time for them to demonstrate the same loyalty in return. You don’t need to be mean, upset, or angry about it. You simply need to state your case carefully. “I understand that some difficulties have come up about being able to pay me what we agreed on. I realize the company has difficult t imes, but I’m talking to you to say that I must insist that we find a way to reinstate the compensation that we agreed upon. Otherwise my commute and other things just won’t make it worth it. I certainly wouldn’t quit on you but, after 15 yeares of service, I’m sure you don’t want me coming to work every day concerned or stressed. So I just have to say ‘where there’s a will, there’s a way.’ What can we do to make this right?”

The firm claims it is the first to “implement this approach at this level around parental leave.” According to Jennifer Allyn, Diversity Strategy Leader at PwC, ”we’re always looking for opportunities to support our people in innovative ways. When it comes to parents, we recognized that the transition back to work after a leave can be challenging. That is why we introduced a new option to phase back on a part-time schedule at full-time pay. This benefit will give both mothers and fathers more flexibility to ease back into their careers after  welcoming a new child to their family.” Nationwide, companies have increased their focus on benefits and perks. According to a Harris Poll conducted on behalf of Glassdoor, nearly three in five (57%) people reporting benefits and perks being among their top considerations before accepting a job. it’s no wonder that employers have doubled down on their offerings to both recruit and retain top talent. PwC’s new policy comes on the heels of employee feedback about parental leave . On average, PwC new mothers have taken 21 weeks of leave and 72% of PwC fathers take 6 weeks of leave. How to Highlight Skills During Each Phase of the Job Search Process

How to Highlight Skills During Each Phase of the Job Search Process How to Highlight Skills During Each Phase of the Job Search Process How to Highlight Your Skills During the Job-Search Process Searching for your next job is a tricky process. The job search process is a marathon, not a sprint. From defining target companies to structuring your resume to appeal to them, there are dozens of decisions to make. Which companies are looking for your blend of expertise and personality? How do you strike the right balance in your cover letter confident but not bragging, technical but not too technical? And how do your skills play into the hiring process? The great news is that the job search process allows you to try different approaches and refine your cover letter skills and interview skills. Learning by going through the job search steps can be effective, especially if you find a way to shorten the learning curve. Here is a framework to help you think through it strategically. Five stages of the job search process. If the idea of looking for a job seems overwhelming, breaking it down into separate job search steps might help. There are many ways to accomplish that. One of my favorites is this five-step structure from Web Junction. Step 1: Establish your career objective. The beginning of the job search process is your opportunity to reflect on your personal and professional objectives. You may be looking to get exposure to a particular industry or set of responsibilities, make an impact in the industry by participating in pioneering efforts, or apply your technical skills in the delivery of a product or a service. Begin with clarity on what you are hoping to accomplish. For the purposes of the resume and cover letter, you may find it effective to frame the objective in terms that are most relevant to the employer. However, assess what is driving you first. As you jot down your thoughts, make a note of any specific skills (both technical and soft) that are relevant for your future direction. We will use those later. Keep in mind that your career objective need not be set in stone! Many candidates feel uncomfortable with the idea of having to choose a single direction from their standpoint, it's too limiting, much like putting themselves in a small box. In my experience, that is a mistake. The purpose of the career objective is to give your initial search efforts a direction. Without it, you risk creating search parameters that are too broad. The result could be a scattered flurry of efforts but not enough impact or traction. Instead, choose a direction and give yourself a specific time frame (2-4 weeks) to explore it. You can always change course later, once you have more experience and data to make a decision. Step 2: Prepare job search tools. The next step in the job search process is to get your tool-kit ready. As a bare minimum starting point, it should include your resume, cover letter and LinkedIn profile. In certain industries, a personal website or portfolio of relevant works may be necessary as well. Here are a few practical guidelines for highlighting your skills as you compile your tool-kit. Be clear on the top technical and soft skills that define success in the role you are seeking. If that is an intimidating proposition, begin by studying job descriptions. Underline the skills that are mentioned most frequently. Understand how your personal skills line up with the job requirements but don't stop there. If a story or an example occurs to you that illustrates effective use of a particular skill, jot it down. Use power words! They can emphasize the great work you do, and provide dynamic context to the resume. Qualifiers and numbers can make your skills shine by highlighting their application and effectiveness. Spend time thinking about the qualifications, experiences and skill combinations that make you a uniquely qualified candidate for the job. This is what I like to call the black marker test borrowed from David Newman's book Do It! Marketing. If your name on the resume or LinkedIn profile could be easily substituted by that of a colleague, you have work to do. Step 3: Find hiring companies. Now that you have a clearly defined target and your job search tools are ready, the next job search step is to find some companies that are looking for your expertise. There are several ways to do this, and your technical and soft skills will help you along the way. Try doing a LinkedIn search for a specific skills, and choose jobs requiring Skill A as a search option. You can filter results geographically or by company. Consider working with an external recruiter or headhunter. A great professional in the executive search industry can be a great ally and asset to you. If you are wondering where to start, check out How to Choose the Right Recruiter for Your Job Search. Make a list of companies you might be interested in. Your list might include current or past employers' competitors, vendors and clients, or companies whose products and services you use and admire. If you would like more guidance on making an effective and well-targeted list of possibilities, check out How a Create a Target Company List for Your Job Search. Step 4: Networking. Contrary to popular opinion, networking isn't about collecting as many business cards as you can. Instead, think of it as an opportunity to connect people you know, and add value to the relationships you already have. As a general guideline, networking works best if you do it as a regular practice, not just when you need a new job. Consider adding a monthly reminder to your calendar to reconnect with past colleagues and managers. You may also find a benefit in attending a couple of events each year that offer opportunities for new introductions. When reaching out to ask about specific job opportunities or career advice, be clear on your goal. You don't want to trick someone into meeting you for coffee under a false pretense. Position your request as asking for resources or guidance. Busy professionals get many requests to pick your brain over coffee, which can be annoying. Count in driving and parking time, coffee ordering, small talk and the actual conversation and they've spent 40 minutes to an hour on answering your questions! Perhaps a quick phone call, a visit to their office, or a meeting at a location convenient to your contact (are they attending a local conference next week?) would result in less of a time commitment. You might use the conversation as an opportunity to test-drive your selected technical and soft skills to a friendly audience. If your contact is experienced in the industry, ask for his or her input on what you believe is most important for professional success. This could be a great way to test your assumptions and refine your value proposition. Step 5: Interview and post-interview follow-up. Interviewing can be nerve-racking. To reduce the case of the jitters, I recommend using a combination of strategic preparation and a re-framing of the interview process as valuable practice. On the strategic preparation front, begin with deeply understanding the employer's needs. You might think of it as collecting authentic employer language: listen well during interviews, pay attention to job descriptions and be present to industry hot buttons. If you can frame your technical and soft skills using the employer's own language, you have a better a chance of demonstrating skill alignment. Your preparation should also include choosing stories that will illustrate your top skills in action. Humans are wired to connect to stories. By selecting a few examples that demonstrate your mastery in applying technical skills, you can paint a picture that will set you apart from other candidates. Lastly, keep in mind that all the job search steps are meant to be a process, not a performance. I recommend spending a half hour reflecting on ways in which just going through the steps will result in a personal and professional win, even if a particular interview does not lead to a job. What will you learn, what skills will you improve, and who will you interact with that will make the effort worth it? By turning the job search process into an obvious win no matter what, you can dial down the stress, learn more effectively, and make your skills shine in every conversation. Ways you can have a meaningful meeting with employees

Ways you can have a meaningful meeting with employees Ways you can have a meaningful meeting with employees You may have noticed that some employees can be resistant to meetings. Often they are seen as a time-consuming distraction from essential day-to-day tasks, and the perception is that much of what is discussed is either superfluous or could be addressed in a more efficient manner.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! You should call a meeting if there is something significant you need to discuss, and need to be sure that everyone asked to attend needs to be there and will benefit from inclusion. These are other tips to help you succeed in organizing a meeting that is both useful and enjoyable for everyone attending.Set clear objectivesWhat are you trying to accomplish? Having a clear understanding of what you need to get out of the meeting will help you achieve those things quickly and will also allow you to better gauge if the meeting is going off track. It will also help you cre ate an agenda for the meeting and let all attendees know ahead of time what they need to prepare.Find the perfect venueIf you have a meeting room at work, this will likely be fine for the average meeting. Sometimes though, a change of location for something significant or celebratory can be a good move. A quick search for ‘event venues near me‘ will no doubt produce a range of locations that will make for an excellent meeting space where attendees feel more engaged and enthused. For meetings that involve brainstorming, a regular meeting room could be a bad environment, so get out and go somewhere exciting to shake things up.Prepare yourselfMeetings happen for all sorts of reasons. You might simply need to throw ideas around regarding a new project. Or it could be a meeting to discuss sensitive matters in the office. You might also need to present a plan concerning the company’s future and get everyone’s feedback. Regardless of the nature of the meeting, it is crucial for you to prepare. You need to have a presentation that people can follow easily and you could even use handouts for them to read, as well as a screen-based presentation. You need to research the topic thoroughly in case you are getting questions from the employees. You don’t want to sound like you have no idea what you’re talking about.Respect everyone’s opinionThe meeting needs to be productive no doubt. Make it a safe space for people to voice their views; do not shut them down or be too critical of their ideas. If you disagree with what people say, be unemotional and provide constructive reasons. You need to take the time to consider all opinions and ideas seriously as alternative perspectives could be useful for the company. You want the meetings to be useful and productive, but you also do not want them to be too long, so that everyone starts getting drained. Leave room for creativity and provide all attendees with the minutes of the meeting. This article first appeared on Your Coffee Break.  You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Stand together  How to be a better ally to women colleagues

Stand together â€"  How to be a better ally to women colleagues Stand together â€"  How to be a better ally to women colleagues In sitting down to research this piece, it wasn’t lost on us that the Career Contessa office is unlike any other when it comes to advocating for women. At the moment, we’re a 100% woman team, run by a woman CEO, and writing articles and throwing events specifically to help other women. And we’re doing it in very close quarters- operating out of an open office space  where we punt questions back and forth all day, run most of our meetings while stretched out on a “millennial pink” couch while also occasionally deep diving into a black hole you might know as videos of cats climbing into La Croix boxes. So yeah, we like each other and we respect each other’s work. But it’s always a learning curve, especially in  an entrepreneurial startup environment. Sometimes the fear of hurting feelings means that we avoid giving feedback openly- or at least, awkwardly couch it in a few circular, stumbling statements. And someone’s bad day can translate into snapping at a coworker in a meeting, causing unfair embarrassment. In the spirit of Galentine’s Day, we’ve pulled together five cardinal rules to help you better advocate for the women around you. Because even this team experiences the occasional misfire. We may be the better sex, but we’re still only human.RULE 1: I WILL POINT OUT SEXISM, NO MATTER HOW INGRAINED OR SEEMINGLY BENIGNThe only way we can end  sexism at work  is to train ourselves to recognize the most latent forms- and commit to pointing them out. Have you ever had a male coworker who speaks to you in a different voice than when he talks to other men? Or maybe one who calls other male coworkers by their last names, but then calls you by your first? These are the sorts of politics at play that we often fail to call out in part because they’re just confusing.Research shows that women are often described in “communal” terms, as in “friendly,” “warm,” and “helpful.” Men instead get descriptors like “intelligent,” “driven, ” or “determined.” The problem with this is that it actually costs women opportunities (LeanIn.org calls this  â€œthe likeability penalty”).  According to a piece by David M. Meyer in the  Harvard Business Review, we often overlook this form of sexism because it’s easier to miss. Says Meyer, “Psychologists  Peter Glick and Susan Fiske  refer to it as benevolent sexism - a chivalrous attitude that suggests women are weak and need men’s protection, in contrast to hostile sexism (an antagonistic attitude toward women and a desire to control or dominate them)…This kind of paternalism suggests that women need to be taken care of by men, and men who endorse this form of benevolent sexism are more likely to accept the mistreatment and harassment of women at work.”Take note of instances where men talk about women at your office in these ways, then point them out. Make sure that you don’t use language that downplays a woman’s professionalism. Here’s the mantra HBR s uggests men use (and it’s a good guide for all of us to watch for as well): “I will focus on competence, not warmth. I will describe her as self-reliant, not needing my protection. I will focus on her brain, not on her physical appearance. I will enhance her status with titles, not use informal language that diminishes her standing.”RULE 2: I WILL STOP MEN FROM INTERRUPTING â€" AND STOP INTERRUPTING OTHER WOMENTake a minute to process this gem: a linguistics PhD who now works in tech, took notes of every interruption in 314 work meetings at her company. The results are as follows: 60% of the interruptions were made by men. The men were also three times more likely to interrupt women than other men. That’s bad right? Well, ladies, this actually made  us feel worse: of the 102 times women interrupted others in meetings, they interrupted other women 89 times. In other words, 87% of the time women interrupted someone, they were cutting off each other.Make a conscious effort to le t every woman say her piece in meetings. If a man interrupts her, circle the conversation back to what she was saying, specifically calling it out by saying something like  â€œKatie, will you finish what you were saying before we move on?” Or, if someone has run away with an idea that she suggested, go with “This all sounds great, thanks again Katie for coming up with this.” But most of all: stop yourself from interrupting women, too. No more self-perpetuation of the problem.RULE 3: I WILL VOCALIZE AND CELEBRATE OTHER WOMEN’S SUCCESSESStudies show  that in mixed gender teams, men tend to receive more credit for any successes than any women on the team. So that’s a very big problem. One way to offset this is to intentionally call out other women’s good work. If you’re a manager, make an effort to publicly point out their successes. If you’re not, you’re still perfectly capable of saying, “I just wanted to say how incredible Megan has been on this project. Her des ign work has completely changed the game for us.” And yes, you need to say all this in front of other colleagues- private thank yous aren’t enough.RULE 4: I WILL OFFSET THE FEEDBACK GAPThere are also oh … a dozen or more studies that show that men receive better feedback throughout their careers. The biggest one is that  women receive only vague information in performance reviews,  whereas men get clear pointers on what they can improve or change. So while we wait for that to change, we can give better feedback to the women around us- even if it’s informal.Talk to your female coworkers and see if they’d be interested in having a performance review coffee where you all agree to talk openly about how you feel each of you is doing at work, as well as give some suggestions for ways to improve. This can sound scary,  especially  for those of us who fear confrontation, but it gets easier every time you do it. You’re there to help each other- it can’t get much better than tha t.RULE 5: I WILL FORGO THE WATERCOOLER CHATWork looks very different for us than it did for our mothers. Often our work weeks are punctuated with coworker happy hours- and we follow our bosses on Instagram. That means that the personal and professional lines get blurry at times, and it can feel natural to talk smack about an annoying coworker to your “work wife.” But that’s toes a dangerous line- after all, why aren’t you just talking to  her  about it? Life’s too short to have coworker drama, but this goes a step beyond that- being a true workplace ally means you need to dedicate yourself to working well with  every  woman in your office. You don’t have to love her, but you do have to work with her. And working well with her can make a huge difference - for all of us.This article first appeared on Career Contessa.

Six Types of Promotional Brochures

Six Types of Promotional Brochures Six Types of Promotional Brochures Just as there are many different types of TV ads, websites, direct mail packs, and radio ads, there are also different types of brochures. Knowing the different incarnations of brochures, and when to deploy them, can make the difference between a sale, an enquiry, or a lost customer.   Brochures usually come into play so you can make a smart buying decision. As someone whose business depends on selling a product or service, knowing what type of brochure you need to advertise your products and services is critical. So, get to know the following five brochure types, and use each according to your sales strategy. Leave-Behinds This type of brochure is self-explanatory; its literally the one you leave behind after meeting a potential customer  or client. You will already have had a conversation (hopefully a successful one) with the customer, talking about the benefits, pricing, and availability of your product or service. Now, as you exit the door, you want to leave an excellent impression, with a brochure that gives as much information as possible in a convincing way.   Summarize your sales pitch to echo the one you just gave. Mirror what you said, concisely, and the elaborate on the more complex details that are hard to memorize. This is where you can do side-by-side comparisons of price points, especially between your product and your competitors. Long after you have said goodbye, the leave-behind has to keep up the work you started, so make it a good one.   Respond to Inquiries You have sparked the customers interest, either through a radio or TV ad, an outdoor campaign, or even something on social media. The first step, the hardest, is done. You got their attention, and they actually want to know more. Now is the time to wow them. This brochure is a hybrid of the Point-Of-Sale and Leave-Behind, and goes out to people known as qualified buyers. Why qualified? Well, theyre a warm prospect, as opposed to a cold one. They have expressed an interest in you, as opposed to someone you have to contact. Since they clearly know a little about you, write this brochure to take your prospect to the next step: the buying process. Hammer home all of your sales points and  pack your brochure with facts  to convince them they cant live without your product. Handouts Sometimes, you will not have access to a physical location, like a showroom or countertop. But, you also wont have a customers contact information, so in that case, you cannot email them a PDF, mail them a brochure, or leave them a brochure after a meeting. When you come up against this problem, you will need to design a handout brochure that can do a lot of heavy lifting. This kind of brochure is not easy. It has to attract people to look inside, so it needs a lot of the wow factor. You may have to spend some money on good paper stock, special printing techniques, and a top-notch designer.   However, getting a complete stranger not only to take your brochure, but open it, read it, and hold onto it, is a challenge. Thats when a skilled copywriter is invaluable. You need to hold the prospects attention, from the front cover to the final contact us page. Make sure the brochure tells a story concisely, and fill it with powerful imagery and compelling facts and figures. Also, blank space is your friend. Pages bogged down with a copy will only make your prospect feel like they have a mountain to climb.   Its possible you may want to combine elements from some of the brochures on this page to create this handout. A Point-of-sale brochure, combined with a leave behind, will be an effective handout if done correctly. And of course, if you get the chance, employ skilled salespeople to hand out the brochure and engage the prospect in a conversation.   Point-of-Sale Also know as point-of-purchase, this brochure is the kind you will encounter as you enter a building, trade show, or store. It is placed at a convenient, eye-catching height, and is designed to draw you in and make you want to know more. This brochure is not a tell-all story. Its more like a trailer for a movie. It gets you interested, but its a conversation starter.   For example, you might encounter several of these brochures, or pamphlets, while standing in line at the bank. They will tell you about free business checking, home loans, auto loans, or special offers for opening credit cards. They are designed to get you to ask a teller more about the services, and they will then turn you over to a specialist who can open a specific account for you.   You want these brochures to stand out. Pay close attention to the cover design. Write an enticing headline.  Your goal is to get potential customers to see your brochure, be curious enough to pick it up and, most importantly, go on to purchase the product or service.   Direct Mail For cold prospects, a brochure sent with a direct mail pack is ideal. This is the type of brochure has a lot of work to do. You are talking to someone who has no current interest in the product or service you are selling. It has to work hard to convert people into qualified buyers, and then customers. You want to concentrate on breaking through the clutter. Whats on the envelope? Whats on the brochure cover? Do you have something to send that could spark an interest, or make you more memorable than anyone else? And, when it comes down to it, a great direct mail letter can make all the difference, so learn how to write one. If you cant, employ an experienced copywriter. And whatever you do, dont send junk mail. It will not help your cause.   Sales Support Tool Here, you are working in a similar zone and a leave-behind. The difference is, this type of  brochure  can be used as a selling aid.  Your salesperson uses these brochures to guide them through their sales pitch. They have larger pages, larger photos and larger headlines. They are designed to work hand-in-hand with a salespersons conversations, and should not be overly-complex, or bare bones. They can also be used as a leave-behind, so if you are on a budget, consider how you can combine this and the leave-behind to do both jobs well. You could also use a handout in this situation, although it may be a touch copy-heavy. Ideally, your sales support tool will complement your sales persons pitch beautifully.
